A well-deserving Aldergrove family is selected as the 2020 ‘Extreme Home Repair’ winner

This year’s Extreme Home Repair winners are the Murphys, Sandra and their adult daughter Jillian. They were nominated by Aldergrove’s Bella Howat, and her sister, Lola. EHR is a program launched in 2003 by Acts of Kindness (AOK), a community outreach of Langley’s Church in the Valley: a Seventh-day Adventist Church.
The sisters have known the family for 53 years, and Bella was the one to surprise the Murphy’s by announcing the news on Christmas Eve.
The Murphy’s bought a Langley City rancher a few years back, as a fixer-upper project, they were going to work on together. A few years later, their son died in the summer of 2016. This loss took its toll on their family. Through all this, Sandra has battled health issues for many years.
A few months ago, while travelling in the United States, Sandra took sick and ended up in the hospital with only 85 per cent of her heart working. Doctors did what they could to stabilize her, then airlifted her back to Canada.
Because of her declining health, Sandra recently lost both her feet and several of her fingers to amputation. Her husband Ken left his job to be at her bedside and to take care of her.
One of the major mandates for this year’s project will be to make the home wheelchair-accessible for Sandra.

Acts of Kindness (AOK) is a charitable initiative based in Langley BC, which aims to build community and cultivate better lives for residents of the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. Since 1996, in collaboration with other local agencies, and through the generosity of major donors, Acts of Kindness has supplied food, education, shelter, support, and compassion to thousands of individuals in Aldergrove, Langley, and beyond.
